The Sport Campus in Leidsche Rijn is a multifunctional complex with a sports hall and the Leidsche Rijn College (LRC), a public school for havo, atheneum, and gymnasium. The municipality of Utrecht and the school wanted to make the school building sustainable by making it energy-neutral. Of course, without compromising on a pleasant, healthy, and comfortable learning environment for more than 1,700 students.
Smart and energy-efficient
“The Smart Building Platform forms the beating heart that connects, monitors, and controls all installations,” says Roy de Bruijn from DIA Group – Project Advisory Bureau. He adds that the platform is linked to sensors in the lighting that track room usage. Furthermore, the platform is enriched with usage data of spaces, such as schedules, obtained directly from sensors in the rooms or via the Building Management System (BMS).
The software calculates what is most efficient and energy-efficient, so that no energy is wasted and students and teachers are always in a comfortable temperature and ensures that nothing is simply left on. For example, if there is a lot of activity in a particular room, the room is automatically cooled. With few people in a large space in winter, the room automatically gets warmer.
The behavior of each building is different, and the platform adjusts accordingly. If it is five degrees in the morning but it will be a sunny day, the system knows that a room with windows facing east will heat up quickly. This data is used to determine heat output.
Roy de Bruijn – DIA Groep: “By continuously monitoring and adjusting, no heat or energy is wasted.”
